Charitable Outreach Activity Wednesday 20 May 2009

Girls at the Glenhope Place of Safety look on with interest during the outreach session.
The African Caribbean Institute of Jamaica/Jamaica Memory Bank (ACIJ/JMB) hosted a Charitable Outreach activity at the Glenhope Place of Safety in Kingston on Wednesday May 20, 2009. The event, which took place during Child Month, included a Charity Box Drive and an interactive presentation to approximately 70 female students, ages 11-18 years, and their teachers at the home.

The theme for the presentation was Sneak Peak Inna Fi Wi Kultcha and it was in keeping with the Division’s mission to foster greater awareness of our African heritage among the youth, thus aiding in its preservation. The presenter, Jasmine Everett (Education Outreach Officer, ACIJ/JMB), explored the origin and significance of language and folklore in Jamaica. This topic generated a healthy discussion and prompted several questions from the students and teachers. The presentation was complimented with audiovisual material and was well received by the group.

The ACIJ/JMB also organised a Charity Box Drive with the aim of donating clothing, shoes, books and other items to the students. Through this initiative the Division sought to show care and appreciation for our youth, some of who are among the less fortunate in our society. This exercise was well supported as large amounts of the aforementioned items were contributed by members of staff. The Division also partnered with Lascelles Laboratories Limited, which provided several packages of care products for the girls.

Robert Williams, manager of the residence was most appreciative of the gesture made by the ACIJ/JMB. He expressed his thanks for the knowledge imparted to the students and for the tokens they received. ACIJ/JMB’s Charitable Outreach Activity was a resounding success. It is hoped that an event of this nature can be sustained as we endeavour to fulfil our mandate to increase the awareness of our heritage, as well as to also reach out to the less fortunate in our society.
