New Edition of IOJ’s Jamaica Journal now available

The Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) on Sunday, August 23, 2009 launched the latest, Special Anniversary Issue of its Jamaica Journal, Volume 32, Nos. 1-2 at the Spanish Court Hotel to a varied audience consisting of members of Boards of Management of the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ), Jamaica Journal contributors, subscribers and staff of the IOJ.

The 130th anniversary issue celebrates the founding of the Institute of Jamaica with a feature on Governor Musgrave written by Professor Verene Shepherd, and an article commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the National Library of Jamaica, which grew out of the West India Reference Library. It also recognizes the contribution of the Most Hon. Edward Seaga, Fellow of the Institute of Jamaica, to Jamaica’s intangible heritage and his role in facilitating the genesis of the Jamaica Journal.

This most recent edition of this renowned publication is no less captivating than its previous editions and maintains its reputable track record of providing factual and insightful articles on the rich cultural, artistic and scientific heritage of our Jamaican people. It also provides commentary on topical issues within the Jamaican society.

In commenting on the significance of the Jamaica Journal, Prof. Barry Chevannes, Chairman of Council, IOJ said, “The Jamaica Journal holds a special place in the intellectual life of Jamaica.”

However the Most Hon. Edward Seaga in addressing the audience lamented that a wider audience needs to become aware of the Journal. He said the Journal deals to a large extent with Jamaica’s culture and this culture he said is “hot” meaning that there is a great demand for information on Jamaica. Mr. Seaga facilitated a book signing at the event’s launch.

Other articles within this issue include “The Crab Invasion of 2006”, an exploratory piece on the appearance of a large number of crabs on the eastern and northern shores of Jamaica during the period May 11-15, 2006.

Currently, there is a special promotion on the Jamaica Journal at the Institute of Jamaica. Copies of the Journal can also be purchased from a variety of retail outlets islandwide.

Subscription cards are available at the Institute of Jamaica and as inserts in each issue of the Journal. The annual two-issue subscription fee is $1800 locally, inclusive of delivery, US$32 for North American subscribers and ₤17 for the United Kingdom and Europe.

The Journal has proved to be an invaluable research resource and has a wide subscription locally and internationally. This includes the libraries of Universities world-wide and subscribers in areas such as the Philippines, Japan, Israel who through this medium are able to share in the rich cultural legacy of this nation.
